21-01-22 Matchday 3 (post-season)

Friday Night Lights 7-1 Delta United FC

The 7pm kick offs saw a total of 15 goals hit the back of the night. Friday Night Lights hit the front in the 8th minute in their game vs Delta United FC. A breaking ball was won by Lights in the final third and their striker coolly slotted past the keeper. Delta Utd responded well with a cracker of a goal 3 minutes later. The right back carried the ball into the opposition and played a square ball to Lee about 25 yards. After taking a touch or two, the angle opened up for Lee and he made no mistake with his curled left footed. That was to be as good as it got for Delta Utd as the Lights started turning the screw in the second half. The floodgates in the final ten minutes as the Lights added goal number 5 from a corner (video below) and number 6 from some great interplay from the right with the man starting the move finishing the move. The final goal in the 55th was a long distance screamer and contender for goal of the night.

Delta 4-3 Alfies Heroes

Delta and Alfies played out a highly entertaining game. Delta looked threatening early on holding the ball in more dangerous areas but struggled to find a break through. Alfies came close in the 20th minute with a corner to the back post finding an Alfies man but the resulting shot was swiped at and ended back with the corner taker. The next Alfies cross was cleared and Delta very nearly went up the other end to punish Alfies but their defence stood strong and dealt with it. Delta scored twice before the half time break. The first goal was fortunate after a fumble from the Alfies keeper allowed the Delta forward to knock the ball but the second goal was an absolute peach from 20 yards. Goals were exchanged at the beginning of the second half with Colm grabbing one for Delta and Alfies responding immediately with a dribble through the middle of the pitch and a cool finish. Alfies got another in the 53rd minute but it proved to be too little too late as Delta grabbed a valuable 4-3 win.

Kearney's Army 1-1 Cutters

The 8pm games saw two tightly contested matches with late goals in both games. Kearneys and Cutters were well matched and neither side gave much away. The Cutters keeper was tested in the 25th minute after good build up play allowed Kearneys to work a shot from 20 yards. Feilim Begley in the Cutters goal made a good low save to his left to keep the game scoreless. The highlight of the first half came on the stroke of half time after a great cross field ball was chested by the Cutter left winger into the path of their forward on the edge of the box. The Cutters man made good contact with the ball but it rattled off the cross bar. Kearneys broke the deadlock with free kick in the second half (video below). They nearly added a second in the 50th minute after turning the ball over inside the Cutters third. The shot had a bit of pace on it but was right down the keeper's throat and was held well. A late goal in the final minutes saved a point for Cutters and maintains their unbeaten start to the post-season.

Team Lightning 3-2 Wembledines

The opening goal in Lightning v Dines came in the 15th minute. After creating an overlap, a lung-bursting run from Pops saw him make use of the 2v1 and produce a good finish to give Lightning the lead. The single goal lead remained in tact right until the 44th minute when Dines converted from the penalty spot (video below). With their heads up, Wembledines snatched another 4 minutes later. A left footed whack across the body saw the ball smash into the top corner and give Dines the lead in emphatic fashion. Dines were nearly in again in the 50th minute as a ball directed goalwards came off the inside of the Lightning post and somehow didn't cross the line. The equaliser came in the 56th minute as Pops played a one-two down the right hand side and finished for his second goal of the game. In the dying embers of the game, a ball was played into the feet of Wobbler. A shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner gave the Dines keeper no chance and Lightning were in the lead with seconds to go. Wembledines did have another foray into the Lighting half as a cross resulted in a goal mouth scramble. With Dines unable to find the crucial goalward touch, Lightning managed to clear the ball and hang on for all three points.
