Things are starting to heat up at the top of the table in the "A" league with three teams in contention for the league title going into the final day. Both Lightning and Alfies were looking to make up ground on the teams above them on Friday night. Lightning hit the front in the 25th minute. After speeding down the right, one pass inside was followed by a second pass inside and a right footed shot into the far post beat the Alfies keeper to put Lightning one up. In the 36th minute, Alfies worked a shot from the edge of the box that forced a good low save from the Lightning keeper. Moments later, the ball broke for Alfies but this time the choice of shot was higher and had the beating of the keeper, 1-1. Ten minutes later, Lightning restored their lead to go 2-1 ahead. With Alfies pushing for the equaliser, Lightning dug in and looked to take their chances on the counter attack. Their best chance came in the 53rd minute when a Lightning clearance found Mads. A good touch from Mads managed to release Lightning's speedster forward. After carrying the ball wide, the resulting shot hit off the post and Alfies still had some hope. This hope turned into something more material in the 56th minute when Alfies converted a penalty kick to rescue a 2-2 draw and keep their chances of winning the league title alive.
In the 8pm kick-off, it was top against bottom as Boca faced Wembledines, but as is consistent with this year's post-season, no result is easily predicted. Dines took the lead in the 14th minute with a shot from the right side of the box finding the bottom corner. Dines doubled their lead in the 25th minute. After play breaking down in the middle, Wembledines spotted the Boca keeper off his line and an audacious shot from 40 yards paid dividends and gave Dines a 2-0 lead. Despite being two down, Boca were not giving up hope and came out strong for the second half. Pressing Wembledines high, Boca nabbed one back 5 minutes into the half. Cutting in from the right side, a low shot found its way under the Dines keeper and Boca were back in the game. The save of the game came in the 45th minute. Boca played a slip ball in from the right and a hard low strike to the near post looked destined to be the equaliser but the Dines keeper got down sharply to get a hand to it and turn the ball around the post. Dines tied up the game in the 50th minute to make it 3-1 which proved too big a deficit for Boca to overcome.
Heading into the final day. three teams will be battling it out for the league title and the two Champions League places. Alfies know a win will be needed vs Wembledines to have any chance of capturing the title. Delta will be in a similar position knowing they'll have to go for all 3 points in their game vs Boca. It's worth noting that the tie-break for league standings is head-to-head results should multiple teams finish on the same points.
In the "B" league, Kearney's recorded a well earned 1-0 victory over Delta Utd. The opening goal came on the stroke of half time. Kearney's right back played a delicious cross-field/through ball to find the left winger in space. About 15 yards diagonally out from goal, just one touch was needed to finish and give Kearney's the all important goal. Kearneys had several more chances in the game but Delta Utd's keeper was there when called upon and Kearneys couldn't add to their lead. In the 50th minute, Delta Utd had an opportunity to grab an equaliser. A through ball to United's striker looked promising, but Kearney's keeper made a good sweeping save at the feet of the Delta Utd striker. Kearney's nearly added to their lead a minute later when the ball was set on the edge of the box. A good strike was kept out by the diving hand of the Delta Utd keeper. 1-0 Kearneys the final score.
Bluestreak and Cutters played out one of the more entertaining 0-0s we've seen. A game that ebbed and flowed saw both teams dominate different periods of the game, but no team could find a breakthrough. In the 15th minute, Bluestreak picked up a breaking ball but the resulting shot fizzed wide. Bluestreak came close again in the 26th minute. After breaking through the middle, Bluestreak slipped their striker down the left. After a great first touch, the shot was knocked just wide of the far post. Cutters rattled the cross bar in the 38th minute after the well struck shot got the slightest of touches from the Bluestreak keeper. In the 55th minute, the Bluestreak keeper was performing defensive duties outside the box and it looked like Cutters may work a goalscoring opportunity. Bluestreak did enough to slow Cutters down and both teams left with clean sheets.
