Bluestreak FC v Wembledines (5-1)
The
game started off with Wembledines needing just 1 point to secure the title.
Things seemed to be going to plan for the league leaders as they had some good
early play without really threatening the Bluestreak goals. The game went
against script, and arguably deservedly so as Bluestreak hit them on the
counter with a terrific breakaway goal thanks to a fantastic over the top ball
by the centre back. Bluestreak proved this was no fluke as they constantly
looked a threat on the wings and up front and went 2 nil up just before half
time. It stayed this way until Wembledines reduced the deficit to make it 2-1
just after half time. Their fightback was short lived, as Bluestreak went on to
add another 3 goals in the second half, to secure a much-deserved win.
Delta United FC v Alfies Heroes (4-3)
This
game had It all, including a goal after just 10 seconds as Delta took an early
lead right from the kickoff. This didn’t deter Alfies Heroes, and were rewarded
thanks to a fantastically worked goal, which was finished with a lovely back
post finish. After a real close-run affair, Delta again went ahead just before
half time thanks to a lovely finish at the near post. The game went again to a
similar pattern in the second half, and while Alfies always threatened, and
came with striking distance not once but twice as the game went 2-2 and then
3-2 to Delta, and then again 3 all. However, it was Delta who finished
victorious, and it would be hard argue the result. Goalscorers for Delta were
Osas, Hector and Mark with a brace. Alfies scorers were Colm Ryan and Shane
Scanlon with a brace in vain.
Team Lightning v Boca Seniors (0-3)
This
game will be one that Blue Lightning won’t want reminding of any time soon.
While Boca played some lovely football, and created some real good goal scoring
opportunities, it was Blue Lightning themselves who shot themselves in the foot
on a couple of occasions. Boca took the lead as Lightning tried to play the
ball out from the back, the ball was dispossessed by some high pressing from
Boca. This was Duly punished with a lovely finish, 1 nil Boca. Lessons weren’t
learned, and Lightning again were caught, this time trying to carry the ball
out from the back. Again, to Bocas credit, they pounced on this chance and were
clinical to make it 2 nil. It could have been worse, as the Lightning keeper
made a superb close save to deny bocas exciting forward making it 3 nil at half
time. To lightnings credit, they came out and had decent spells of possession
in the 2nd half, but Boca proved far too strong on the night, and
again created plenty of chances, eventually putting the game to bed close to
full time. 3 nil and a well deserved win.
Kearneys Army v Cutters (2-2)
This
was another game with pure entertainment value for the brave souls who came out
to watch in the torrential rain. Cutters broke the deadlock after 10 minutes
with a goal of the night contender. The ball was struck from 25 yards and was
destined for the top right corner the minute it left the boot. Kearneys army
weren’t to be deterred, and after some fantastic build up play, were able to
make it 1 all just before the half time break. The game followed a similar
pattern in the second half, with both teams very evenly matched. Cutters again
retook the lead, but this time it was no goal of the season contender, it was
in fact a mistake which Kearneys wont want to see again. A miss pass from the
keeper to the right back allowed Cutters to get in and eventually slot home for
the lead. The response from Kearneys was swift, and only 30 seconds later drew
level again. The game could have been won by either side, but arguably should
have been 3 points for Cutters, but only for an outstanding close range save
from the Kearneys keeper to keep it level. A point a piece was probably a fair
reflection on a highly entertaining game.
