Boca Seniors 2 - 0 Delta Rejects
Boca started the match well putting Delta Rejects under pressure with several corners and free kicks. Their best chance of the half came in the 10th minute when a ball from the right winger was delivered into the oncoming midfielder. Boca needed to just direct the ball on target but the resulting touch ended up going just over. Delta Rejects were happy to play on the counter attack with the Boca keeper choosing to sweep well outside his own box. Boca eventually got the breakthrough in the 35th minute. A ball from deep into the left channel found Boca's left winger who finished over the oncoming keeper. Boca remained solid and doubled their lead in the 45th minute with a good right footed strike from a central area just outside the box. Boca saw the game out to record a 2-0 victory.
Kearneys Army 0 - 3 Lakers
Lakers took three points in this game to go top of the "B" league (albeit with second-placed Bluestreak having a game in hand). The opening half saw both teams exchange chances with Lakers probably shading it in terms of possession and territory. After dispossessing the full back in the 12th minute, Lakers looked to be in on goal with the Kearneys keeper off his line but the resulting chipped shot went wide. After a scoreless first half, Lakers got the opening goal of the game in the 35th minute. A clever inswinging free kick caught the Kearneys keeper out as the ball went straight in at the front post. Lakers were nearly in again a minute later when a front post knock down resulted in an attempted overhead kick which went wide. Lakers added a second midway through the half and finished strong with a 58th minute goal. A strong shot stung the hands of the Kearneys keeper and Lakers were on hand to the rebound to make it 3-0. Kearneys nearly got a consolation goal a minute from time when a good ball to the back post forced a punch from the Lakers keeper.
Cutters 0 - 1 Wembeldines
A crucial clash in the "A" league saw league leaders Cutters take on Wembeldines. Dines knew a win would put them right in the mix coming into the final weeks of the season. An early Colm O'Mahony goal proved to be decisive as Wembeldines managed the game well to see out a victory by the smallest of margins. Cutters battled well and had several half chances to equalise, but Wembeldines stood firm and really denied Cutters of anything clear cut. In the 42nd minute, after some pinball in the Dines box and plenty of handball shouts, Cutters shot ended up deflecting out for a corner. Cutters lost their goalkeeper Feilim Begley to injury in the second half so had to mount a challenge with 10 men for the remainder of the game. Needing a minor miracle, Cutters nearly rescued a point in the 58th minute as a dropping ball was struck sweetly but the strike went just over the bar. Interestingly, this result means both Team Lightning and Delta will have destiny in their own hands. If Lightning can beat Delta next week, this will guarantee them the league. Delta know that if they beat Lightning next week, AND beat Wembeldines the week after, they will be crowned champions - and thus capture a double of both the regular and post-season league titles. Wembeldines and Cutters both remain in the mix and will target winning their remaining games and hope the permutations and results elsewhere work in their favour. Whatever happens, it's clear the eventual champions will have won a hard fought league.
Team Lightning 6-1 Analog
A Shane O'Regan hat-trick put Team Lightning on their way to collecting all three points versus Analog. O'Regan struck first in the 6th minute to give Lightning a one goal lead. Philip Moran doubled this lead 5 minutes later with a good strike. Colm O'Mahony got one back to make it 2-1 but unfortunately this was as good as it got for Analog. Shane O'Regan added his second in the 35th minute but failed to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot - a low attempt to the right was excellently saved by the Analog keeper. Lightning went on to add three more goals - 1 more from O'Regan and 2 courtesy of Wobbler. The result means that Lightning just need to beat Delta next week to secure the "A" league crown.
