Brazuca and Alfies played out a scoreless first half with chances at both ends. A breakaway Brazuca attack in the 5th minute forced a good low save from the Alfies keeper. In the 10th minute, Alfies had a chance from point blank range after a ball was played across the six yard box. The Brazuca keeper closed in as the Alfies forward made contact and managed to deny any space for the ball to pass and keep the game scoreless. The game opened up in the second half when a ball played across the face of the goal to the back post was met by an incoming Brazuca player to open the scoring. Brazuca added a second in the 40th minute with a superb strike from distance (video below) and a 3rd from a free kick in the 46th minute (video below). Alfies responded by getting one back by Brazuca notched a fourth two minutes later. At 4-1, Brazuca managed to grab two late goals to improve their goal difference with Robbie Carey being sent through one-on-one a minute from time. Although the initial attempt was saved the feet of the keeper, Carey found the back of the net with the follow up attempt to get Brazuca u and running for the season.
Bluestreak and Polonia played out a highly competitive game. After a scoreless first half, Bluestreak took the lead in the 37th minute - the unorthodox offside rules of the Friday Night League catching new boys Polonia Limerick out. Polonia responded and were back in the game in the 43rd minute. A left footed cross from the right hand side was headed back across goal and knocked in to make it 1-1. A goal from distance in the 47th minute gave Polonia a one goal advantage which they managed to hang onto for the remainder of the game. 2-1 Polonia the final score as they claim a scalp from last year's Champions League winners Bluestreak.
Team Lightning thought their tie with Barely Atheltic would be plain sailing after going 2 up. The first came in the 4th minute when Barely got caught playing around at the back and Lightning punished them. The second goal came in the 19th minute courtesy of a glancing header (which he may or may not have meant) from Lightning debutant Mick Evitt. Barely responded well in the second half and got one back from a right footed finesse shot in the 35th minute. The game was all square in the 45th minute when a great diagonal ball went over the head of the Lightning defender and was coolly lifted over the keeper from the Barely forward. With all to play for, a penalty in the 47th minute gave Lightning the lead. Mick Evitt duly dispatched (video below) to bag a brace on his debut. Lightning added a 4th in the dying minutes to get their first W on the board for the new season.
Wembledines and Sporting Viking played out a cagey first half and with Dines taking a narrow 1-0 lead in at the half time break. Like a boxer jabbing in the first half, Dines found the measure of their opponents in the second half and went 2-0 up in the 38th minute with a shot from distance. Viking almost immediately responded when a great cross from deep was met first time and forced a superb love save from Dines netminder Frank McEvoy. Wembledines added a third in the 45th minute and with Viking pushing on to find a way back into the game, their defence was over run in the 53rd minute as Dines added a fourth to kill off the game. Two more goals were added including a nice headed goal from a corner (video below). Viking could only manage one in response to give a final score of Wembledines 6-1 Sporting Viking.
