 Team Lightning 5-0 Kearney's Army

Kicking off the new season saw a repeat of last year's Covid Cup Final. Lightning proved too much for Kearney's on this outing and saw themselves coming in 2-0 up at half-time. The game was wrapped up by the 7ft tall man known as Wobbler who rose highest to put Lightning 3-0 ahead. The goal of the match would come at the end though as Philip Maher's chip gave Lightning the perfect start to the new season with a 5-0 win.

Bluestreak FC 3-0 Delta United FC

A back and forth game saw plenty of action in all areas of the pitch but Bluestreak proved more clinical when it came to putting the ball in the back of the net. Bluestreak set their stall out early registering a shot on target in the first minute. From a corner, the shot was directed goalwards but proved an easy catch for the Delta Utd keeper. In the 14th minute, Bluestreak hit the front. A free kick was spilled by the Delta Utd keeper and the rebound was easily taken by Dara Shanahan. Delta Utd responded immediately and after some supremely skilful play on the right byline, Delta's winger beat the Bluestreak defender but the keeper managed to stop the resulting shot. The rebound that fell to the Delta Utd player was a tad more difficult than Bluestreak's rebound moments earlier and the shot was hit over. For the next few minutes, Delta Utd found themselves on top with Josh looking dangerous down the left hand side. With no goals to show for the Delta Utd pressure, it was Bluestreak that snatched a second against the run of the play to secure a comfortable lead coming in at half-time. The second half saw Bluestreak notch one more after a great through ball from midfield found Callum who duly finished to give Bluestreak the 3-0 victory.

Boca Seniors 3-2 Delta

With two relatively one sided results in the 7pm kick-offs, the 8pm kick-offs were anything but. Boca hit the front after 20 minutes courtesy of an own-goal from Delta's #6. A contrast in styles saw Delta dictate play for large periods of the match followed by quick build up play whenever Boca turned the ball over. Delta found their equaliser at the start of the second half. The Delta #14 turned the Boca defender inside out and applied a serious finish from 20 yards out. Boca restored their lead soon after as Alan scored with a header. The high energy Boca did their best to match the ball retaining Delta and despite all the possession in the opposition half, Delta struggled to penetrate the goal. In the 48th minute, a goal kick to the right side was knocked on and the Boca forward applied a great finish from a narrow angle. Delta were given some hope as the brought the score back to 3-2 with 5 minutes to go. A video of the goal can be seen below and is well worth a watch.

Wembledines 2-2 Alfies Heroes

New guys Alfies Heroes played out a tight game with stalwarts Wembledines. Alfies grabbed their first ever FNL goal in the 14th minute of the first half. Their second ever FNL goal then came in the 14th minute of the second half. A break down the right saw an exquisite cross and first time volley. This forced a great low save from Frank McEvoy in the Wembledines goal. Alfie's striker was first to the loose ball though and buried it. After some good build up play, Wembledines found a goal in the 50th minute. Having seen a last minute glancing header drift just wide, I thought Dines had missed their opportunity to rescue a point from the game. Minutes later I found out the score was actually 2-2, not 2-1...so apologies to Wembledines for missing their second goal! A point a piece it finished between two teams who will likely have a say as to where the silverware will be headed this season.
