Match Reports - 19 Sep

 Gems 3-3 Wembledines

Wembledines began the game with just 7 players and this allowed gems to race into a 3 goal lead. A first half hat trick from Josh Howe for the students. Wembledines delayed bodies were eventually added and they pulled 2 back. First from a corner where Phil Blackwell headed home and just before half time niall danaher added one. Just after half time Paul Hennessy equalised. Both teams went looking for a winner but neither could find one and a draw was the fair result

Brazuca 1-4 Cutters

Brazuca took an early lead through the lively Mattheus. The lead didn’t last long as cutters were level not even a minute later through Oisin Reid with a fine header to get the Clare lads going on the night. Seanie Gully on debut put Cutters 2-1 up just before half time. The second half allowed cutters to really push on and goals from Dylan McMahon and another from from seanie gully gave cutters a comfortable 4-1 win

Team Lightning 5-1 Sheffield Thursday

First Half

Sheffield Thursday, another team who had to start the game with only 7 players.

Team Lightning eased into a 3–0 lead with goals from Scanlon (2) and Mads (1). Just before half time Scanlon got a 3rd. First half hat trick.

Second Half

Sheffield added to their ranks as 3 more players joined in. Within 5 mins they pulled a consolation goal back, Joe Mullins the scorer.

Final goal of the game came from a Wobbler trademark header from a corner.

Polonia Limerick 4-2 Sporting Viking

H.T. 2–1

Polonia raced into a 2–0 lead in the first 10 mins. First Gonzalo and then Evan. Sporting pulled one back from the kick-off – and what a goal from Aaron Grant. Spotting the keeper off his line he scored from the half way.

Second half Polonia scored a 3rd (Duka). Sporting pulled a goal back from the penalty spot (Grant again). The goalscorer of a second goal from Evan, Polonia then saw the game out for a comfortable win.

Fast starts from Sheffield Thursday and Team Polonia

 Gems 0-9 Sheffield

A tough first evening for Gems as they fell to a heavy defat at the hands of Sheffield Thursday. Sheffield started with just 8 players as they waited for their full complement to arrive. The game stayed at 0-0 for 15 minutes but then they gained control and made it 4-0 before the break. A further 5 were added after half time. The Gems keeper put in a very credible display despite the score line with some great saves. Goals scored by Brin Holmes 3, James Casey 2, Joe Mullane 2, Craig Whelan and Benji

Bluestreak 1 - 5 Team Polonia

Night owls ever presents Bluestreak got off to a tough start at the hands of last season's Champions League winners Team Polonia. Polonia took an early lead after 15 minutes through Telmek with a smart finish. But just 3 minutes later Tomas Hayes replied from the spot to level up the tie. That was as good as it would get for the past champions as Polonia then took firm control. Bart put them 2-1 again just minutes later to go in 2-1 at the break. The second half was dominated by the Poles and further goals from Jacob, Harco and Dulci secured a big opening day win

Barely Atheltic 1 - 1 Cappaquigley

Last year's Champions League runners up, the all action all heart Cappaquigley could only start this season with a draw as they played out a hard battle with Barely Athletic who have made fast improvements year on year and will be looking for a Cappaquigley type season for themselves. The game was even throughout and the first half went in scoreless after few chances. The game came alive just 2 minutes into the second half when Tyler put the champions 1 up with a brilliant strike from outside the box into the bottom left hand corner which left the keeper with no chance. Barely after this pushed hard and really owned the second half. They eventually got their reward with just 2 minutes remaining. A smart shot inside a crowded goalmouth from Cameron Crowe secured a fair draw.

Late drama as Dines comeback secures Champions League spot

 Cappaquigley 2-2 Cutters

After we were left with just two games on Friday night, there was to be no shortage of importance as both games had a lot on the line. Cappaquigley who have had a real breakout year thanks to their tireless effort and quality knew a draw would seal them a place in the champions league places. They got off to the perfect start when a fantastic through ball was finished low to go 1 up. Cutters responded in quick fashion and a debit beautiful curling effort from Fionn levelled the tie and the sides went in level. Cutters really put the foot down and after being on top in the first half again looked the more dangerous team to begin the second. They were however undone and went behind again thanks to a superb breakaway goal from the students. Cutters again levelled a few minutes later when Locky found the back of the net. Cutters pushed and pushed for a winner and forced arguably the save of the entire Friday night soccer league campaign when a deflected effort was miraculously tipped over from the Cappa keeper. The game was to finish all square and Cappa secure that all important final spot in the champions league

Bluestreak 2-3 Wembledines

Another drama filled game with huge implications for the post season took place at 8pm where Bluestreak needed just a point to keep their Champions League spot. They got off to the perfect start when Micheal Blake headed home a great delivery to go 1 up. Bluestreak didn’t stop there and just 10 minutes later it was that man Blake again and they were 2 up and had the Champions League post season in sight. Wembledines however had other intentions and just before half time pulled one back when a whipped in corner was headed home to go in 2-1 down at half time. This wasn’t to be the last corner to cause agony for Bluestreak and yet again they were undone by a corner with 10 to go to set up a barrage of attacks from Wembledines for the last 10 minutes. Bluestreak retreated further and further back and had looked to have done enough until the literal last touch of the game. Yet another header from a corner sparked great scenes as Wembledines secured a vital win and their place in the last 4 of the Champions League. Bluestreak will be kicking themselves for not holding on and now instead venture to the Europa League post season
